Nicole Fiore, a senior at Sacred Heart High School in Los Angeles, was awarded a $400 scholarship from the local branch of the Italian Catholic Federation at St. Bede the Venerable Catholic Church in La Cañada Flintridge.

Fiore, the daughter of Giuseppe and Martha Fiore, earned the scholarship by earning a 4.0 GPA at Sacred Heart where she was involved as a captain of the track team and served as a letterwoman representing the school at masses, alumni meetings and at welcome back events.

Her cumulative GPA for her four years at the high school was 3.7. She will graduate in June and has been accepted at UC Davis where she received a grant. She plans to major in sociology and pursue a career as a social worker.

"Why social work? Because I want to give back to society," she said. "I am a people person, and I equate success in life by what I can give to my community."

She said she plans to use the scholarship to purchase books.

"When you consider that each college textbook costs close to or over $100, this money will surely help me as I begin my college career," she said.

A parishioner at St. Mary Church in Boyle Heights, Nicole has been active as a member of the youth group, where she served on the board of directors. She also sang in the youth organization's singing group.

One of the requirements for the scholarship, in addition to good grades and involvement in school and community activities, is that the student comes from an Italian heritage. Her father, a diesel mechanic, is Italian by way of Mexico. His father immigrated to Mexico from Italy, where Giuseppe was born. Her mother Martha is a native of Mexico. Nicole's older sister, Cynthia, is a student at UC Santa Barbara, and older brother Giuseppe Angel works in the tourist industry.

Looking ahead to her time at UC Davis, Fiore also plans to learn Italian. Students who study Italian in college are eligible for a $600 scholarship in junior year.

"I certainly plan to take Italian and to apply for that scholarship," she said.

Addressing the members of the branch this past Wednesday, at the monthly meeting held in the parish center at St. Bede, Fiore thanked the group for its generosity, and thanked her parents for the sacrifices they have been making to provide her and her sister and brother with the opportunity to get an education.

Mark Mannarelli, branch scholarship chairman, in introducing Nicole, noted that the branch seeks out students each year from the local high schools for the scholarships and that high school seniors who wish to apply should contact him.Photo by Al RestivoCONGRATULATIONS — Nicole Fiore, recipient of the St. Bede Italian Catholic Federation Scholarship Award, is flanked by Tom Passanisi, left, ICF Branch 374 president, and her mother Martha.
