LC Grad Peter Wells Getting Ready For 2004 Olympic Games

August 12, 2004

Peter Wells, a 1992 graduate of La Cañada High, is one of 18 members of the 2004 U.S. Olympic Sailing Team who have finished the U.S. Olympic Committee's Team Processing at the American College of Greece and are awaiting the start of the 2004 Olympic Games tomorrow (Friday) in Athens. The Games will continue through Aug. 29.

Some members of the team have been in Athens for several months, but others like Wells, a former La Cañada Flintridge resident who now lives in Newport Beach, have only been in the ancient Mediterranean city a few weeks.

They are now all living together in the Athlete's Village and have been making final preparations, such as moving boats and equipment into the Aghios Kosmas Sailing Centre, to get ready for the last part of their Olympic adventure.

For the past week, the team members have been making final adjustments to their equipment and have gone through the measurement process before starting the first official practice races today (Thursday). The event venue for the sailing team is located at Glyfadha, an upscale suburb south of Athens.

Television coverage of the sailing events will begin on the Bravo cable channel on Saturday with race reports to be announced every scheduled racing day until Aug. 26.

The coverage will rotate the various sailing events and will usually feature one or two races a day. Sometimes there will be onboard cameras to give the viewer more of a feeling of being right there with the competitors. Non featured events will be covered, but not always on a daily basis.

The daily coverage will consist of half-hour programs televised between midnight and 1 p.m. in the Pacific time zone.

Near the end of the Olympics, CNBC will wrap up Olympic sailing coverage with a two-hour program to be televised between 3 and 5 p.m. Pacific Standard Time on Aug. 28. Viewers should check local listings as times may vary.
