LCF Held Hostage

August 12, 2004

I do not know personally any of the parties involved in the dispute between the city council and Mr. Short.

Any knowledge I have has been gleaned from local press reports; but it appears to me that Mr. Short is to be congratulated for providing the citizens of our city with a first class example of how the legal system of our country can be subverted by a single individual or a small group to thwart the will and desires of the majority who have the common good as their goal.

Nor is this an isolated example, as the efforts of the organization referred to by some as the American Criminal Lawyers Union, better known as the ACLU, to remove a harmless cross from the county of Los Angeles seal, will attest.

A close reading of the press indicates that Mr. Short is holding the city hostage while he satisfies a personal vendetta against some of our elected officials. It would not appear to be money which motivates him, as he is reported to have paid the greater part of the sewer assessment.

Perhaps Mr. Short could be persuaded to change his attitude were he to spend some time inhaling the noxious gases which accumulate at all times of the year at the intersection of Highland Drive and Chevy Chase Drive. Even a short time in this vicinity would convert the most hardened anti-sewer evangelist into a true believer, and doubtless there are many other spots in our city which would do the same.

Yours sincerely,

Robert W. Jaross, M.D.
