'Leading A Balanced Life' Reception a Hit at Verdugo Hills Hospital

August 05, 2004|By Jane Napier Neely

More than 100 people attended Tuesday afternoon's reception and introduction of the Verdugo Hills Hospital's new Balanced Life program. The program, designed to improve balance and prevent falls, is a first for the hospital and has attracted attention from hospitals in other states.

Making the program possible with generous grants are Uni-Health Foundation, Glendale Community Foundation, Capital Group and Burbank Healthcare Foundation.

"We are so pleased that there was such a good turnout for the reception," said Laura Knowles, physical therapist and Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation director.

Opening remarks at the reception were made by Len LaBella, CEO of the hospital, and Kathy Salazar, CFO from Uni-Health Foundation.

Mark Wallace gave a Tai Chi demonstration. He leads the lunchtime Tai Chi classes for the "A Balanced Life" patients.

"Falls are a serious public health problem among older adults," said Knowles. She said more than one-third of adults aged 65 years or older fall each year. Of those who fall, 20 percent to 30 percent suffer moderate to severe injuries that reduce mobility and independence. For people ages 65 and older, falls are the leading cause of injury death.

Knowles also said enrollment in the Balanced Life program requires a doctor's referral and is covered by Medicare and most health plans.
