The La Cañada boys' varsity golf team got revenge on South Pasadena for dropping them from the ranks of the undefeated last week by beating the Tigers in their second Rio Hondo League encounter, 183-201, at the La Cañada Country Club on April 15.

The Spartans, who improved to 10-1 overall and to 3-1 in league, played San Marino in league at the Santa Anita Golf Course on Tuesday, but no results were available at press time.

The Spartans will play Temple City in a league match today (Thursday) at the Eaton Canyon Golf Course at 3 p.m.

Against the Tigers, La Cañada captured four of the top five spots, with Phil Horwith winning the individual match with a par-34. David Lipsky, David Armstrong and Joe Williams tied for second place, along with South Pasadena's Jesse Lee, with identical scores of 36. Andy Mikuckis also shot a 41 for La Cañada.

La Cañada competed in the Mark Keppel Classic at El Prado Golf Course in Chino on April 14. This was an 18-hole tournament which was played in a two-man best-ball format.

Horwith shot a 75 and Lipsky fired a 77. Their combined best-ball score was a 68 which was good enough for fourth place overall in the tournament.

Other individual scores for the Spartans were Umar Khan with a 76, Armstrong with a 78, Williams with a 81 and Mikuckis with a 89.

South Pasadena defeated the Spartans 198-210 in a league match at Brookside Golf Course in Pasadena on April 13. It was the first league loss for the Spartans who fell to 9-1 overall and to 2-1 in league.

Two Spartans, Horwith and Chris Henley, tied for third place along with the Tigers' Martin Kim and Jesse Lee. All four shot a four-over-par 40. Khan fired a 42 and Armstrong and Williams finished with 44s.

La Cañada coach Dave Appleton is optimistic about the Spartans' chances to win the league title. "La Cañada suffered a tough loss to South Pasadena on April 13 at Brookside. This was easily our worst performance of the year. We rebounded nicely by beating them at the La Cañada Country Club on April 15.

"La Cañada can still win the Rio Hondo League championship by beating San Marino on April 20 at the Santa Anita Golf Course and again on April 27 at the La Cañada Country Club," he said.
