Longtime La Cañada resident A.J. "Sandy" Evangelista, 73, died Thursday, April 15, of pulmonary arrest following a five-month battle with cancer. He will be greatly missed by his loving family and his many friends and colleagues.

Sandy was born in Hartford, Conn. and raised in New York. After spending two years in the armed forces, he settled in Southern California, where he called La Cañada his home for the past 30 years.

This man will always be remembered for the passion with which he lived his life. He became fascinated with the world of electronics in high school, which led to his lifelong love of amateur radio (K6HAE), a military career testing guided missiles and, following his discharge, a 43-year career with National Wire and Cable Corporation of Los Angeles, beginning as a sales engineer and ultimately serving as president and chief executive officer.

His enthusiasm for life was also evident by how he spent his leisure time as he enjoyed numerous hobbies including astronomy, music, boating and photography.

Sandy will always be remembered for his generous spirit, his fun-loving character and for his commitment to what he valued as the most important asset in his life?his family and friends.

Sandy is survived by his wife of 52 years, Angela, and children John (Diane), Susan (Brian), and Matthew (Suzy). He also leaves his grandchildren Alex, Tyler and Olivia.

There will be a visitation at Forest Lawn, Glendale, tomorrow (Friday, April 23), from 5 to 9 p.m. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 24, at St. Bede the Venerable Catholic Church in La Cañada, with internment immediately following at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Glendale (241-4151).
