Don't dare pick on this 'Nerd'

April 22, 2004

Beware if you save someone's life and that person decides to repay the debt owed - especially if you've never met the person to know what he or she is like.

In "The Nerd," that fate befalls Willum Cubbert, a rising young architect played by Don Owens Jones in the upcoming comedy at the Sierra Madre Playhouse.

In Vietnam, another soldier saved Cubbert's life when he was wounded. Although he has never met the man, Willum has written to Rick Steadman (Barry Schwam) pledging his willingness to do anything to repay the debt.

It's Willum's 34th birthday. He is delighted when Rick appears at the party without an invitation. Before long, delight changes to despair, for Willum discovers that Rick is a bumbling oaf, a hopeless "nerd." He totally lacks social graces, intelligence, or tact.

Rick seriously overstays his welcome. Uproarious situations, one after another, drive the usually calm Willum to the point of plotting violence. Who knows what Rick's fate might have been if it weren't for the surprise twist at the play's ending?

Completing the cast, directed by Wayne Foste, are Kristin Shawn Harper as Tansy McGinnis, Daniel S. Joseph as Axel Hammond, Mike Firek as Warnock Waldgrave, Vicky McCormick as Clelia Waldgrave and Evan Alderson as Thor Waldgrave.

This farce by Larry Shue was a smash hit on Broadway. It got rave reviews from the Milwaukee Tribune: "?A spring tonic of side-bruising laughter?" and from Variety: "?The audience almost never stops laughing?."
